Previous research on workplace violence among social workers tend to focus primarily on cases caused by clients. Much less attention is paid to the workplace violence from co-workers or supervisors. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of workplace violence experienced by medical social workers on the level of depression and turnover intention based on the Affective Events Theory(AET).
The analysis was conducted with a total of 197 medical social workers and SPSS macro process 2.16.1. was utilized for analytical tool. We analyzed workplace violence for the past 1 year by differentiating social welfare workers from other co-workers, since medical social workers usually work in cooperation with medical and administrative staffs. As a result, for the past 1 year, medical social workers experiencing workplace violence showed higher degree of depression, and further this has served as a decisive factor in turnover intention. The results of this study presented evidence for institutional and practical intervention to prevent and solve workplace violence among medical social workers.
